There are some reviews of 2012 floating around out there, but lets look to the future!
The following are some predictions for the tech world of 2013. Some are dead certs, some are quite far-fetched. But then again, that’s what we said about Google buying a phone manufacturer!
- Android will continue to dominate in devices shipped, but will suffer with lack of revenue
- Apple will have their 80 billionth app download
- Samsung will ride high all the way to Q4. Blood will be in the water and the sharks will come
- The sharks are ZTE and Huawei. As Samsung watched and copied Apple, ZTE and Huawei are watching and copying Samsung
- Microsoft will buy Nokia. They are doing a stellar job of lowering Nokia’s share price to make the acquisition easier
- This year, we get a new iPhone. It will be an iPhone 5S – Summer / Autumn
- This year the iPad will get a refresh to match the industrial design of iPad Mini. – Autumn / Holidays
- Google will bring out the next big version of Android, 4.3 or more likely 5 called Key Lime Pie – Summer
- Wearable computing will move main stream. I’m waiting to get my Pebble watch. There will be more examples of similar products. Apple’s entry will be a game changer
- 4G Mobile data in the UK will have a slow start, as the cost for entry in to the super speed party will be high
- You will actually be able to buy an OLED TV
- The next Xbox and Playstation will be announced. The Playstation will support 4K (Ultra HD) resolution. The Xbox may not
- Pundits will keep talking about the non-existent Apple Television
Well, those are the predictions! Lets see what happens in 2013. Got any more suggestions, please fire them in the comments.

The Ecosystem War. A phrase used a lot on this site and quite a bit in my conversations regarding the current state of technology and it’s future. Well it’s about time that I explained what it means.
Ecology (Ecosystem) - (Oxford Dictionaries)
- (in general use) a complex network or interconnected system:
Silicon Valley’s entrepreneurial ecosystem
This definition gives a very simple explanation of the complicated entity that is the technology ecosystem. Many a time have gone where I’ve prattled on about this and the war that is going on but the time has come for a full and clear explanation of what it is, why it matters and importantly, how it may be won.
In my explanation of my point of view on technology (here) I outlined how I am integrated in to the Apple ecosystem as it is the one that works best for me.
In the consumer technology world there are ecosystems. These are based in both software and hardware. The structure for a modern ecosystem is commonly set out like this:

In my right hand, an iPhone 4S, taking a picture of what is in the left.
A box fresh, brand new Google Nexus 7.
One of my colleagues had told me he had ordered Google’s first tablet when it was announced earlier in the month and I had asked him rather emphatically to bring it in when he got it, as it’s the most important thing to happen in the tablet market in 6 months.
(Note: For most people, 6 months isn’t a huge amount of time. In the tech industry, it’s about 2 years.)
So, what do I think from my hands on? Read More »

In the frist of these general updates, I’ll be addressing a lot of the questions I get asked all to frequently.
Let’s begin with this one “When’s the next iPhone coming out? What’s it going to be like?”
Well, if the “leaks” like this, this, this and this are to be taken as gospel, the following is evident:
- This will be a new iPhone design, that won’t be radically different to the current style
- The screen is going to grow to some where in the region of 4 inches
- The old 30 Dock Connector is dead, it’s being replaced with a new, smaller connector
- The body of the phone seems to be mostly made of metal
- Some say that the manufacturing has already commenced, but regardless of this, expect to see the new iPhone launched in the same window as last years – end of September / beginning of October
If you are savvy you will notice the word leaks is quotes at the top of this list. That’s because I find it increasingly harder to believe that the device we have seen over the last few weeks is the next iPhone. Read More »

Announcing the Heads Up Display Open Design Project!
Allow me to explain just what’s going on here. This section of the website is going to be dedicated to my open design project (ODP) where I’ll be exploring ideas for wearable heads up displays.
Why?
Well, Google, Valve and Oakley have all made waves recently announcing (and in Google’s case, showing) that they are developing technologies to commercialise wearable computers to give us all a real world, usable, heads up display. With these companies entering the fold and rumors of Apple developing a wearable accessory, its not hard to imagine that the next platform war will be very public and holds one of the largest levels of potential than the ones that have come and gone. (Let’s also make note that Microsoft would be daft not to be considering entering this race, so you can bet they are working on this technologies as well – I’d also put money on it that Samsung are looking in to it.)
So what does one geek and his poxy blog have to do with these mega-corps who are envisioning our future? Click here to find out more

Is the Android OS rolling its way to becoming the new Windows?
[Update] Ok, I wrote this article before the Motorola purchase by Google. In doing so, Google have rendered many of my points mute. But it is interesting to see where the market was going before this bombshell. But just one more thing, Google bought one of the companies that makes some of the better Android devices, after a rather large amount of loss in the finance markets and having a war chest of 17,000 patent. This has all happened in about 2 years. I wonder if in a year’s time, we will actually be talking about Microsoft’s purchase of Nokia in the same way.
Yep, it is and there’s no use arguing about it. Not with me by any rate. The idea came from when I was looking over articles about the scale and expansion of Android over the mobile market. I’m not going to reel off all the figures that the other blogs put up. Nothing against that, as they are news sources, this is an opinion site and to read more on my thoughts on the matter, jump past the break. Read More »
